Boost 2 (universal) is a tunnel racer developed by Jonathan Lanis. In this adrenaline pumping game, players tilt their iDevice to avoid colored blocks while racing down a hypnotizing tunnel.
Boost 2 is the update to the original game Boost 3D, which came out in 2009. In this update the developer added three new game modes. Players have the option to play time trial, classic, survival or multiplayer. Multiplayer allows users to play Boost 2 online with their friends through Game Center.
The interface has been completely redesigned and the graphics look amazing on the retina display. For those not familiar with the controls, Boost 2 is simple to play but hard to master. Users tilt their device left or right to avoid objects or to hit speed boosts. Hitting three speed boosts in a row causes players to reach maximum speed but it is difficult to maintain. Hitting a block slows users down, and when they are at the lowest speed the blocks will end the game.
The original soundtrack really gets your heart pumping. If you would rather play the game listening to your favorite tunes, you can select one from the options screen. While the game opens the iTunes library, the song continues to play once users close out of the app, requiring users to open the Music player to end the song.
Boost 2 isn’t a typical racing game, and it does a great job in actually simulating speed. I felt dizzy when I first played this game and couldn’t believe how fast I was traveling down the tunnel. Boost 2 contains a total of 23 different achievements that users can unlock, which are displayed on Game Center and OpenFeint along with leaderboard results.
The game is quite addicting, but it can easily become frustrating. Sometimes it seems like it is virtually impossible to avoid objects as you are flying through the tunnel at warp speed. While the game is both simple and frustating, it is still addicting – which in my book makes it one of the greatest tunnel race games in the App Store.
The updated version really brings the tunnel racing game to the world of high definition gaming. The developer did a great job updating Boost 2 without damaging the quality of the game. If you’re look for a great tunnel game, pick up Boost 2 before trying out any other games similar to it in the App Store. Once you play one level, you won’t need another game like it.
