Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon (universal) is a unique side-scrolling game developed by Explore and Create Limited. Sir Benfro, the main character, is a well-known scientist, explorer and naturalist during his generation.
Throughout the game, players help guide Sir Benfro through insane levels that feature weird, yet imaginative creatures. Sir Benfro floats through each level with the help of his brilliant balloon, which is powered by Light Emitting Daves (fireflies).
The controls for Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon are exceptionally easy. Pressing and holding anywhere on the screen guides Sir Benfro and his brilliant balloon through each level. Releasing the finger from the screen allows his balloon to fall, and tapping rapidly on the screen slows the balloon down when players feel like they are flying too quickly.
The goal of Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon is to make it to the end of the level without losing all of the Light Emitting Daves. Players are able to collect fireflies as they fly through each level, but the magical fireflies are lost when gamers steer Sir Benfro into objects. The fireflies also fly away on their own, which makes the game pretty challenging.
Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon contains many weird, eerie and strange creatures that are out of this world. The four worlds are adventurous and full of surprises, which makes the game so much fun to play.
While gamers may feel like Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon is too simple, the game is actually quite challenging. I found it difficult to complete the first world, but I continued to play until I succeeded. Whenever the game feels too simple or if players feel like challenging themselves, there are three difficulty settings to choose from that include beginner, brilliant and bonkers.
If gamers would like to explore more of the game, they can check out the Spotter’s Guide. This guide familiarizes players with the weird creatures in the game. Postcards of the creatures can also be sent via Facebook, Twitter or email to friends and family members.
The sound effects in Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon are quirky and fitting, but become annoying quickly. I eventually located the sound controls (located in the About menu) so that I could adjust the sound effects to my liking.
All in all, Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon is a game not like any other found in the App Store. The game play is similar to Tiny Wings, and the graphics are exceptionally well designed. Gamers will spend quite a few hours flying over the ocean, through the caves and to forests while collecting as many Light Emitting Daves as possible.
