Spanish-English Dictionary and Verbs by Ultralingua is perfect for anyone who needs to brush up on their Spanish-English skills. The educational app may seem too expensive for some users, but all the features it offers are worth every penny. What makes the dictionary stand out over others like it in the App Store is that it does not require an internet connection. Users can take the app to the most remote locations and still use it.
With over 75,000 entries and 290,0000 translations, users won’t have any problems locating a specific word, phrase or verb. The smart search results displays words as users type to help narrow selections all while correcting any misspellings.
The app can either translate Spanish to English or English to Spanish. The features include the ability to look up words using the search bar, a complete verb conjugation tool for thousands of verbs and access to a number translator that has a calculator-like interface to help users translate numerals instantly.
The Spanish-English Dictionary doesn’t only include common words, but it also provides users with slang, regional differences in spelling and usage, noun genders as well as technical usage. One of the best feature incorporated into the app are the topical keywords that let users find the right word for their desired context. Ultralingua’s dictionary features keywords in many different categories that include but are not limited to plant and animal, culinary, sports, medical and geographical terms.
The interface looks pretty basic and doesn’t incorporate any bells and whistles that make it pop from the screen, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just doesn’t have any interface design that makes it stand out from other apps similar to it.
Also, the interface is confusing to use at first. I particularly enjoyed how the developers included a picture tutorial on the app’s start up to help users navigate it quickly, but it isn’t quite polished enough to prevent any confusion. In particular, the app would benefit from including explanations for the diamonds beside words and a complete listing of what all the abbreviations mean.
One improvement I would like to see added to this app’s interface is a verbal pronunciation feature to help users speak properly—although I do realize that this would greatly increase the file size.
Despite a couple minor flaws, the interface is optimized differently on the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad so it takes advantage of the screen real estate. There are a few different controls to make the app easier to navigate. On the iPhone or iPod touch, users conjugate a verb from the dictionary by tapping it while iPad users must double tap on the verb boxes to open the table.
Whether users are traveling over seas to visit a Spanish-speaking country or need to brush up on their language skills for class, Spanish-English Dictionary and Verbs is the ideal app for iOS devices. Don’t forget to check out Ultralingua’s other language dictionaries for French, Italian, Portuguese, German and other languages.
