:-D : Gamers take on their friends and enemies in this word game that requires players to be accurate and speedy spellers.

:-( : Could use more characters and special powers.

8-O : Players can unleash special powers to increase damage, restore health and get new letters.

Writer Rumble (universal) isn’t just another word game. At first glance it may look like a Scrabble inspired game, but it takes word games to the next level by adding fighter elements to the game play.

There’s a quick tutorial to help players get started. When it’s time to play, select one of the two game modes: survive or fight with words. Survive is a single player mode that lets gamers choose one of six legendary authors: Agatha, Edgar, The Brothers, Jane, Homer and Howard. Players can then pick up three powers to use while playing which range from Health to Triple Damage. The key is to find a combination that works well for you and stick with it.

This game mode puts players against monsters that they must take on by throwing letters at them to spell words on a grid. It uses the traditional Scrabble-like gameplay where players must use the adjacent letter tiles to form a word. The damage inflicted on the enemy is determined by the total point value of the word spelled. The powers that gamers chose are available to use, but once one is used it has to recharge before it can be used again. Running out of health means it is game over.

Fight with Words is a multiplayer mode that gamers can play between friends through Bluetooth in a local match or via Game Center. Once a character is chosen, players are assigned powers instead of selecting them. The winner of a word match is determined out of three matches. There’s also Game Center leaderboards and achievements for those who like to compete.

If Writer Rumble still doesn’t sound challenging enough, there are rules that must be followed. For instance, the same word can’t be used again and making a mistake can cost you health. This means you won’t want to try guessing to see if a word exists, unless you are pretty confident.

Since Writer Rumble is relatively new, it has some bugs that need polished out to make it a solid title. It’s sometimes difficult to connect and the game may crash on occasion. These are bugs that have been reported to the developer, and they are sure to be fixed soon. The only complaint that I had is that there needs to be more legendary writers to choose and even more special powers to help spice up the gameplay.

Writer Rumble is an impressive word game that sets itself apart from the pack. It’s challenging, addicting and impressive. Whether you’re a word puzzle fan or just looking for something new to play, it’s worth adding to the gaming library.
